Mobile World Congress 2011, everything to know

Last week was the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona that attracted more than 60,000 people and you may wondering like me, what they saw ??? Although I’m living in this city, I was not willing to pay 649 euros to get in and walk on its 60,000 square meters but in spite of that, I was keeping an eye about what was going on in this 6th edition.

Strange the number… 60,000 square meters… 60,000 people !!! Anyway, by what I will start my resume… hmmmm… soft or hard ???

Soft because it will be quick. One thing, I like it, was companies developing applications that allow to detect

fake things. For example, by putting a piece of clothing on your mobile, it can tell you if it is fake or not and another can tell you if the passport has been falsified or not. A company has also developed a program to have all our membership cards in our cell phone.

The operating system webOS seems to expand its market by providing new smartphones called Veer and Pre3 and a tablet PC called TouchPad all under the brand HP/Palm. About the Veer, its dimension is very little 84 x 54,5 x 15,1 mm with a 2,57 inch touch screen and about the Pre3, it will be more powerful than the previous version with its 1,4 Ghz processor and better characteristics like a HD camera, a Wifi allowing 5 simultaneous connections, a VPN connection… About the TouchPad, it looks like the Ipad but characteristics are different, it has a webcam, a 1,2 Ghz processor, Wifi, Bluetooth, mini USB… and of course, it can exchange information with a webOS mobile.

HTC will launch its facebook phones called Chacha and Salsa. It seems that the team was very inspired about latin dance !!! Both have Android as operating system, webcam, camera… and a facebook button which flashes when new messages appear on our profile for example. About the differences, Chacha has a 2,6 inch touchscreen and Salsa 3,4 inch one and the first one has a physical keyboard.

LG with its Optimus 3D, a cell phone able to display 3D without glasses and also to capture 3D !!! It is equipped with 2 HD cameras so we can create 3D videos and a direct link to Youtube 3D to upload them. With its 4,3 inch touch screen, we have to be well in front of the mobile to appreciate any 3D applications and videos at about 25/30 cm.

Samsung showed its Galaxy S II with an AMOLED 4,27 inch touch screen, a dual core 1 Ghz processor, Wifi, camera… and a 8,49 mm thick !!! No wonder why they are promoting it like the thinnest smartphone in the world. According to the first tests, it is super fast and very beautiful colors because of the AMOLED technology offering a quality picture much more higher than a Full HD.

What else ??? Since those past months, we see more and more products with big screens and in the congress, many constructors have presented the contrary, phones with small one like Sony Ericsson with its Xperia 10 for instance. It weighs only 88g and owns Android, Wifi, GPS, camera…

Microsoft announced its new operating system called simply Windows Phone with a better interface and quicker than the old version called Windows Mobile and it will allow a lot of interactions with Xbox Live, social networks… It seems that they put every things to fight against Apple and Google.

Talking about those last companies, a new association has been created called Wholesale Applications Community. This group has the main goal to fight against the expansion of AppStore and Android Market by defining standards for applications for example. The group is composed of Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and 24 telecom companies like AT&T, Verizon, Orange, China Telecom...

For Barcelona, this congress has brought to the city €1.5 billion. Not bad knowing that for this year, there was an increase of 20% of visitors compared to the last year, that’s why the mayor, Jordi Hereu, was so happy :-)
